Nuestra Señora del Rosario y San Benito de Palermo, Paysandú

Nuestra Señora del Rosario y San Benito is a minor basilica in downtown Paysandú with Renaissance Revival features throughout its design. The structure displays symmetrical proportions, tall windows, and classical details in both its exterior and interior spaces.

The original parish was founded in 1805 and suffered damage during the 1864 siege of Paysandú, which led to reconstruction efforts afterward. The church received its minor basilica status in 1949.

The basilica houses religious artifacts and hosts regular Catholic ceremonies while serving as a central gathering point for the faithful in northwestern Uruguay.

The basilica welcomes visitors along Montecaseros Street between 18 de Julio and Florida avenues in the city center. Regular masses occur throughout the week and the doors are open for visitors during daytime hours.

A Walcker organ from 1906 is housed within the basilica and continues to be used for services and musical performances. This European instrument is noteworthy because such organs are rarely preserved in the region.
