The protected area spans 12,172 hectares of rolling hills with granite outcrops containing numerous indigenous rock paintings along streams and prairies.
The rock paintings at Chamanga date back approximately 1000 years and were created using a mixture of hematite and organic materials on granite surfaces.
The site contains 44 documented rock art locations featuring geometric patterns and cruciform elements painted in red pigments on exposed granite formations.
The location connects to Route 3 at kilometer 164 through Paso de la Cadena road, with nearby towns Trinidad and Durazno providing accommodation and services.
These prehistoric paintings appear on granite blocks in open fields rather than caves, distinguishing them from other rock art sites in South America.
