Guaíra Falls, Former waterfall system in Paraná, Brazil and Paraguay

The Guaíra Falls consisted of eighteen waterfalls distributed in seven groups along the Paraná River, spanning 4,828 meters in width.

The falls disappeared in 1982 when the Itaipu Dam reservoir submerged them, transforming the entire natural formation into an artificial lake.

Indigenous communities named the falls 'Guaíra' in Tupi-Guarani language, meaning 'the impassable place beyond which no one can pass'.

The water flow reached 49,000 cubic meters per second, making it twice as powerful as Niagara Falls and twelve times greater than Victoria Falls.

The sound of water falling through the narrow 61-meter gorge could be heard from a distance of 30 kilometers.
