Puente Maurício Joppert, Bridge over Paraná River in São Paulo, Brazil
The Maurício Joppert Bridge is a prestressed concrete structure that crosses the Paraná River to link São Paulo state with Mato Grosso do Sul. A large embankment system was built beneath the roadway to accommodate water level changes caused by an upstream reservoir.
Completed in 1964, this was Brazil's longest bridge at the time before other longer structures were built later. Its construction fulfilled a long-sought connection between two states across a major waterway.
The bridge carries the name of a writer whose advocacy campaign was crucial to making this crossing a reality. This naming reflects how the region honors individuals who shaped its development and regional connectivity.
The crossing is open to vehicle traffic and serves as a key route for regional transportation. Visitors can drive across or view it from nearby vantage points along the riverbanks.
A 10-kilometer embankment had to be constructed beneath the roadway to raise it above the reservoir created by a hydroelectric plant. This extensive preparatory work was essential to create a stable foundation in such challenging terrain.
