Casa da Feitoria Velha - Atual Museu do Imigrante, Immigration museum in São Leopoldo, Brazil

Casa da Feitoria Velha is a two-storey Portuguese colonial building on its original site in the Feitoria district, about two kilometres east of central São Leopoldo along Avenida Imperatriz Leopoldina. Bavarian-style details were added to its Portuguese architecture for the immigration festivities. As a museum it holds ox carts, farm equipment and old gravestones moved from the municipal cemetery across Avenida Feitoria.

The building was founded in 1788 as a royal hemp factory and later served starting in 1824 as temporary shelter for German immigrants arriving from Hamburg. This transformation marked the beginning of a large migration wave that would shape the region.

The museum documents the experiences of German immigrants through personal objects, letters, and photographs from the 1800s. Visitors can see belongings that families brought when they arrived and how they established themselves in this new region.

The museum is located about two kilometers from central São Leopoldo along Avenida Imperatriz Leopoldina. It helps to check opening hours beforehand, as the museum is particularly accessible for school groups.

The ox-cart track from Lomba Grande, where the royal factory's overseer lived, became Avenida Feitoria, running over six kilometres to central São Leopoldo. In front of the house stands the old Armazém Central, a stop where carters from Lomba Grande spent the night before market day.
