Praia do Forte, Beach with colonial fort in Florianópolis, Brazil
Praia do Forte is a beach on the northern coast of Florianópolis with fine sand and shallow water ideal for swimming. The São José da Ponta Grossa Fort sits on a headland at the southern end and can be reached by walking trails.
The fort was built between 1740 and 1744 to defend the Portuguese colony from attack. It was abandoned temporarily during a Spanish invasion in 1777 but survived and still stands today.
Fishermen work the waters here regularly, selling their catch to nearby restaurants and giving the beach a working harbor feel. This everyday rhythm connects visitors to the local food culture and sea-based traditions.
The beach is accessed by a road descending from Jurerê Internacional with multiple entry points for cars and pedestrians. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer fewer crowds and better light for exploring the fort and coastline.
The beach is known for letting you walk about 220 meters into the water while still touching bottom. This unusually long shallow zone makes it possible to wade far out, creating a distinctive experience for an ocean beach.
