Praia do Matadeiro, Beach in south Florianopolis, Brazil
Praia do Matadeiro is a beach on the southern coast of Florianopolis on Santa Catarina Island. The shoreline extends about 650 meters with widths that vary from narrow sections to broader areas of white sand.
The beach took its name in 1785 when it served as a processing site during Brazil's whaling operations. This maritime industry shaped the place and left its mark on the local landscape.
Local fishing families still use this beach as a working landing point for their boats and gear. You can watch fishermen going about their daily routines along the shoreline.
To reach the beach you need to cross the Quinca Antonio River, so wear appropriate footwear and come prepared for the crossing. Since shops and restaurants are scarce, bring your own food and drinks from elsewhere.
Between July and November whales can be spotted from Ponta das Campanhas, a former observation post of the whaling industry. This creates an unusual connection between the area's whaling past and current wildlife viewing opportunities.
