The indigenous Carijós people first inhabited this region, with the name Tapera referring to structures similar to abandoned indigenous dwellings.

During low tide, visitors can walk across a narrow strip of exposed seabed to reach Ilha Dona Francisca, one of two islands visible from the shore.
