Cathedral Basilica Minor of Our Lady of Light, Catholic cathedral in central Curitiba, Brazil
The Cathedral Basilica Minor of Our Lady of Light is a neoclassical church building in Curitiba with tall columns, multiple domes, and large stained glass windows. The interior is structured around these architectural elements that create distinct spaces throughout the building.
Construction took place between 1876 and 1893 on the site of a wooden church dating from 1668. The building received its Minor Basilica status in 1993.
The cathedral displays artistic works by Italian painters from the 19th century who decorated its interior with religious scenes. These artworks remain central to how the building looks and feels for visitors today.
The building is located in the city center at Rua Barão do Serro Azul. Visitors can attend mass services or take part in guided tours to explore the interior.
During renovations in 2012, workers found a nine-meter deep water well beneath the presbytery that dated back to the original wooden church. This discovery showed how long the sacred ground had been in use.
