Ilhas dos Currais Marine National Park, Marine reserve in Paraná, Brazil.
Ilhas dos Currais Marine National Park is a protected marine area off the coast of Paraná comprising three small islands and surrounding coral reef systems. The reserve covers roughly 1,400 hectares of ocean territory and lies several kilometers offshore in the Atlantic.
The Brazilian government established this marine reserve in 2013 through federal legislation, making it the third marine protected area in the country. The creation reflected growing efforts to safeguard coastal ecosystems from fishing pressure and development.
Local fishermen use traditional methods in designated zones, preserving maritime practices that have shaped the region for generations. This way of working with the sea remains visible in how people interact with the water today.
A national conservation authority manages the park and enforces rules against illegal fishing and construction to protect the marine ecosystem. Visitors are best served by joining authorized boat tours or guided trips to experience the reserve properly.
The three islands serve as nesting and breeding grounds for thousands of seabirds including brown boobies and frigatebirds that reproduce regularly there. These bird colonies are so numerous that visitors can observe them clearly from boats during tours.
