Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, Portuguese colonial fortress on Mel Island, Paranaguá, Brazil.
The fortress features stone walls reaching 10 meters in height with a main gate decorated by an intricate stone carving and shell sculpture.
Built between 1767 and 1770 under Portuguese governor Luís António de Sousa Botelho Mourão, the fortress protected the coast against unauthorized maritime access.
The National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute recognized the fortress in 1938 as a protected monument of Brazilian colonial military architecture.
Visitors can access the fortress through organized boat tours from Paranaguá, which include guided walks through the military installations and museum.
The fortress walls contain materials extracted directly from Whale Hill, following an organic design that adapts to the natural topography.
