Igreja do Bom Jesus do Bonfim das Águas Vermelhas

Igreja do Bom Jesus do Bonfim das Águas Vermelhas is a chapel near the Água Vermelha stream with traditional Brazilian architectural features and decorative touches. The building contains a main chapel, side altars, a music room, and a small gathering space for community use.

João de Camargo, born into slavery in 1858, founded this religious site in 1906 after relocating to Sorocaba. The establishment was formally recognized as a spiritual association in 1913 following legal disputes over healing practices.

The chapel blends Catholic practices with African-Brazilian spiritual traditions, creating a space where different beliefs coexist. You can sense this mix in how the interior is arranged and how people gather here to worship.

The chapel is located in the Jardim Vergueiro neighborhood near Barão de Tatuí Avenue and is easily reached. It is best to visit during regular opening hours or when community events are taking place.

The founder was among the first people of African descent to settle in Sorocaba after slavery and establish a spiritual center. His creation showed that formerly enslaved people could build strength and community in the city.
