Praia Grande, Coastal municipality in São Paulo, Brazil.
Praia Grande is a coastal city in São Paulo state that stretches between São Vicente and Mongaguá and includes twelve separate beach sections. The city connects residential neighborhoods with commercial centers distributed across several districts, each offering its own local markets and services.
Until 1967 the area belonged to the neighboring municipality of São Vicente, until residents voted for independence in a plebiscite. The separation marked the beginning of an independent administration that focused on developing coastal infrastructure.
The name refers to the long stretch of shoreline that extends for several kilometers and has served as a natural landmark for centuries. Today families from inland areas visit the beaches during summer months, while locals live and work by the sea throughout the year.
The city divides into several neighborhoods that each offer different atmospheres and beach access points. Visitors find public facilities and shops in the four main commercial zones distributed along the entire coastline.
The Palácio das Artes combines theater, museum and other cultural spaces under one roof and hosts local performances throughout the year. The facility opened in 2008 and became a central meeting point for artistic events in the region.
