Outeiro de Santa Catarina is a heritage hill in downtown Santos built on a rocky foundation with three connected levels accessed by staircases. The structure features stone walls topped with crenellations and displays neo-gothic architectural details including pointed arch doorways and windows throughout.
Portuguese colonizers donated the land to early settlers in 1539, where Luis de Goes and Catarina de Aguillar established a chapel. An Italian physician named Giovanni Eboli later transformed the site between 1880 and 1884 by constructing a castle-style residence from stones remaining on the mount.
The chapel at the base reflects the spiritual needs of the earliest inhabitants and remains a focal point for visitors today. You can see how religious spaces were created in the early colonial period through its simple design and location.
The site is accessible Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM and is located at Visconde do Rio Branco Street 48 in the historical center. Be aware that reaching the three levels requires climbing staircases, so wear comfortable shoes for the visit.
The castle-like structure was built by Giovanni Eboli, an Italian physician who saw the site as an opportunity to create a personal retreat with medieval influences. His decision to reuse stones from the original mount shows an early awareness of working with the land rather than replacing it entirely.
