Santos, Port city in São Paulo state, Brazil.
Santos occupies the northern side of São Vicente Island and runs along the Atlantic coast with beaches backed by a continuous garden strip. The port docks run parallel to the shore and form a separate zone from the city center with residential areas and shops.
Brás Cubas founded the settlement in 1546 on the island coast. By the early 20th century, the place had become the main export harbor for coffee from the interior.
The museum building once hosted traders shouting bids across its main hall during coffee auctions. Visitors today walk through the same hall where clerks recorded deals by hand in large ledgers.
Buses connect the coast regularly with São Paulo on roads that cross through the Serra do Mar mountains. Access to beach and garden areas is open at most points without restrictions.
The garden along the beaches holds a Guinness record as the longest seaside garden in the world. Palms and flower beds run for more than five kilometers without interruption.
