Forte da Vera Cruz de Itapema, Colonial fortress in Guarujá, Brazil
The fortress stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Santos port channel, featuring thick stone walls and strategic observation points.
Built in the second half of the 16th century, the fortress protected the eastern margin of the estuary and controlled ship access to Santos port.
The structure represents Portuguese colonial military architecture with its design incorporating defense elements specific to coastal fortifications of Brazil.
Visitors can reach the fortress through Vicente de Carvalho district, where they can observe large vessels navigating through the Santos port channel.
The fortress served as a customs control point in the 1900s to combat smuggling activities after its military defensive role ended.
