The Antigo Colégio São José is a three-story school building designed by Ramos de Azevedo in the early 20th century, located on Rua da Glória. The structure features classical architectural details typical of that era, with distinct floor divisions and solid masonry work.

The site began in 1825 as the second Santa Casa de Misericórdia hospital, the Hospital dos Lázaros, on the Chácara dos Ingleses. After the Santa Casa moved to a larger building, the structure was remodeled by architect Ramos de Azevedo in the early 20th century for the Externato São José, founded in 1880. The school operated until 22 December 2006, when it closed with 724 students.

The building reflects how private educational institutions shaped the Liberdade neighborhood and influenced the daily rhythms of the community. Its presence marked the area as a center for learning and social development.

The building sits at the intersection of Rua da Glória and Rua dos Estudantes, making it straightforward to locate in the neighborhood. It now houses the Damásio educational institution, which occupies the space and may allow visitors to see portions of the interior.

The site sits on the Caminho do Mar, the old road to Santos, and the Santa Casa placed its second hospital here in 1825 so the dead could be carried easily to the Cemitério dos Aflitos across the street. The Marquesa de Santos lived in the earlier sobrado between 1817 and 1822.
