Antigo Colégio São José

The Antigo Colégio São José is a three-story school building designed by Ramos de Azevedo in the early 20th century, located on Rua da Glória. The structure features classical architectural details typical of that era, with distinct floor divisions and solid masonry work.

The building was initially constructed as the first Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital before being repurposed as a shelter. It later became a school that operated for more than 120 years under the São José name.

The building reflects how private educational institutions shaped the Liberdade neighborhood and influenced the daily rhythms of the community. Its presence marked the area as a center for learning and social development.

The building sits at the intersection of Rua da Glória and Rua dos Estudantes, making it straightforward to locate in the neighborhood. It now houses the Damásio educational institution, which occupies the space and may allow visitors to see portions of the interior.
