Capela do Menino Jesus e Santa Luzia, Gothic Revival chapel in São Paulo, Brazil.
The Capela do Menino Jesus e Santa Luzia is a Gothic Revival chapel in São Paulo with elaborate interior details and design. Stained glass windows and religious murals painted by Florentine artist Orestes Sercelli adorn the interior.
Italian architect Domenico Delpiano designed the chapel, which opened in 1901 and became the second Gothic-style religious building in the city. This founding resulted from the personal request of a prominent local resident.
The chapel preserves traditional Latin Mass services with Gregorian chants that happen every Sunday, keeping historical Catholic liturgical practices alive. Visitors can experience these ancient singing forms and religious rituals firsthand.
The chapel is open to visitors on weekdays from 8:00 to 17:00, with a lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00. Weekend hours are shorter, so check ahead before your visit.
The chapel's creation grew from a remarkable story: a wealthy resident, Anna Maria de Almeida Lorena Machado, recovered a Child Jesus statue from a shipwreck. In gratitude for this unexpected rescue, she commissioned the building of this chapel.
