United Nations Building, Mixed-use residential and commercial building in Bela Vista District, São Paulo, Brazil

The Edifício Nações Unidas is a mixed-use residential and commercial building of concrete at the corner of Avenida Paulista and Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio, with a further entrance on Rua São Carlos do Pinhal. Its facade combines ceramic tiles and brise-soleil, plus a ceramic mural by Clóvis Graciano now protected behind glass. Divided into three blocks of differing facades and sizes, it holds 420 one- and two-bedroom apartments and two garage basements.

Abelardo de Souza designed the Edifício Nações Unidas in 1952 and 1953, with construction starting in 1955 and inauguration in 1959. Its approval required debate because the city's building code did not foresee modernist mixed-use buildings on the then residential Avenida Paulista. The project was approved after arguing that it had no commercial entrance on Avenida Paulista. In 2004 Conpresp began the listing process, which remains ongoing.

The building's name refers to the United Nations, and its ground-floor gallery links Avenida Paulista to Rua São Carlos do Pinhal through a 6-metre-wide corridor lined with 25 shops, framed by green pillars and circular concrete ceiling forms. A ceramic mural by Clóvis Graciano, once part of a garden, is now protected behind resistant glass.

The building occupies the corner of Avenida Paulista and Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio, with a third entrance on Rua São Carlos do Pinhal. A 6-metre-wide gallery on the ground floor links Avenida Paulista to Rua São Carlos do Pinhal, lined with 25 shops; the private lifts to the apartments stand among them and visitors reach them only after being buzzed in.

The building's maintenance has long been funded by investors who installed antennas on the roof, paying for the use of the common area rather than rent. The ceramic mural by Clóvis Graciano on the facade, once part of a garden, is now protected behind resistant glass.
