Casa das Caldeiras, Cultural center in Água Branca district, São Paulo, Brazil.
Casa das Caldeiras is a cultural center housed in a former industrial power plant in the Água Branca district of São Paulo. The building features three massive brick chimneys and high ceilings with upper windows, retaining the raw character of its manufacturing past.
The plant was built in the 1920s to supply power to the Matarazzo Industries complex, which operated the largest industrial facility in Latin America during the 1930s. The site received heritage protection in 1986 and gradually transitioned into a cultural venue.
The building serves as a gathering place where art exhibitions and performances reflect how communities reclaim industrial spaces for creative expression. Visitors experience the contrast between the working factory past and the vibrant artistic activities happening today.
The center is located in western São Paulo and easy to access by public transport or car. The spacious interior with high ceilings and abundant natural light from upper windows creates good viewing conditions for exhibitions and performances.
The building retains original machinery and equipment from its factory days, which remain visible throughout the space alongside contemporary artworks. This juxtaposition of old industrial machinery and new art creates an unexpected and memorable experience for visitors.
