Ponte Cruzeiro do Sul, Railway and road bridge in São Paulo, Brazil
Ponte Cruzeiro do Sul is a combined railway and road bridge that crosses the Tietê River with six traffic lanes for vehicles and a separate track for Metro Line 1-Blue. The structure serves both car traffic and public transit within a single construction.
Construction began in 1964 and reused structural elements from an earlier tramway structure, with the bridge opening in 1967 as part of the Marginal Tietê highway system. This marked a key moment in modernizing São Paulo's transportation network.
The bridge carries the name of journalist Ary Silva since 2010, honoring his advocacy for the expansion of Cruzeiro do Sul Avenue. This naming reflects how the city recognizes individuals who shaped its modern infrastructure.
The bridge sits between two other major bridges along Marginal Tietê and connects the Santana and Pari neighborhoods. Visitors exploring the area can see the structure from different viewpoints along the riverbank.
The bridge stretches about 550 meters and was partly built from materials of a historical tramway facility that was dismantled from the city. This recycling of older structures was an innovative approach to cost-effective construction at the time.
