Muriqui, Municipality district in Mangaratiba, Brazil.
Muriqui is a municipal district in Mangaratiba situated along the Green Coast of Rio de Janeiro state, featuring Atlantic Forest vegetation and direct ocean access. The landscape is defined by dense green forest that extends down to the water.
The area began to be settled in 1568 when Portuguese authorities distributed the land to the Sá family for colonization. This marked the start of European presence in the region.
The name comes from the Tupi language and refers to spider monkeys that once lived in large numbers in the local forests. This name still reflects the area's original wildlife today.
The BR-101 highway passes through the district and connects it to Rio de Janeiro and other coastal towns. This main road is the primary way to reach and explore the area.
During winter months, a weather phenomenon occurs that is named after a former resident of the district. This local wind pattern has become part of the area's identity.
