São Conrado, Coastal district in South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
São Conrado is a coastal neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone, stretching between Barra da Tijuca and Leblon. It is defined by residential buildings interspersed with ocean views and the Dois Irmãos Mountain, while the Fashion Mall contains approximately 150 stores from national and international designers.
The neighborhood takes its name from the Igreja de São Conrado church, built in the early 1900s by Conrado Jacob Niemeyer. This church was the first landmark that shaped settlement in this coastal area.
The neighborhood displays a striking contrast between upscale residential towers and luxury shopping on one side and Rocinha, Brazil's largest favela, on the other. This juxtaposition shapes daily life and the social fabric of the area.
The area is well served by public transportation, especially buses that connect major points, with several main roads running through it. Visitors should note that parking is scarce in this densely populated zone, so arriving early in the morning or using public transit is advisable.
The Pedra da Gávea granite formation rises 842 meters above sea level and serves as a prime launch point for hang gliding. The formation takes its name from its shape, which resembles the gaff of a sailing ship.
