Praia de São Conrado

Praia de São Conrado is a beach in Rio de Janeiro with light-colored sand stretching roughly 2 kilometers along the coast. Two distinctive mountain peaks, Morro Dois Irmãos and Pedra da Gávea, frame the shore and define its natural landscape.

This area shifted from a quiet coastal strip into a major residential and commercial center during the 1980s, when luxury developments and a major shopping mall were built. The construction boom marked the moment when the beach gained its present-day status and character.

People from different social backgrounds gather and mix here, sharing the same stretch of sand and water throughout the day. This meeting point reflects how the city functions in everyday moments rather than in planned interactions.

The beach has lifeguard stations, showers, restrooms, and food kiosks spaced along the shore for quick refreshment. Facilities for renting chairs are available, and there is generally enough space to find a comfortable spot even on busier days.

A section of this beach serves as a landing zone for paragliders and hang gliders who launch from the nearby Pedra Bonita mountain. Watching these fliers descend toward the sand while sitting by the water is a striking and unexpected sight.
