Parque da Cidade, Municipal natural park in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Parque da Cidade is a nature park in Gávea with dense forests, landscaped gardens, a lake featuring a small island, and steep slopes throughout. The varied terrain creates different landscapes and rest areas as you walk through the grounds.
The land originally belonged to the Marquês de São Vicente, who built his summer residence there in 1809, before the Guinle family transferred it to the city in 1939. This donation marked the transformation from private estate to public space.
The park houses the Historical Museum of Rio de Janeiro, which relocated here in 1948 and displays artworks from Brazilian and international artists. Visitors can explore artistic developments and collections spanning different periods through its galleries.
The park can be accessed via Santa Marinha street at the top of Gávea using private vehicle, taxi, or public transportation. Different entry points offer various ways to explore depending on where you start your visit.
The park connects directly to Tijuca National Park, forming part of Rio de Janeiro's larger environmental protection network. This connection allows visitors to move between the two protected areas and explore a more extensive forest region.
