Vila Isabel, Traditional neighborhood in North Zone, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Vila Isabel is a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro's North Zone that developed as a planned district and today features cultural and educational landmarks. The Boulevard 28 de Setembro runs through the center with musical notes and instruments set into black and white Portuguese cobblestones, while the state university and a major hospital serve the area.
The area began taking shape in 1872 when Baron Drummond purchased land and transformed the former Imperial Quinta do Macaco into Rio de Janeiro's first planned district. This development introduced a structured urban layout that set it apart from other neighborhoods of the time.
The Unidos de Vila Isabel samba school shapes neighborhood identity and draws residents together through regular rehearsals and carnival preparations. Music is woven into daily life here, from street celebrations to the decorated boulevard that honors this cultural heritage.
The neighborhood is easy to navigate, with Boulevard 28 de Setembro serving as the main reference point through the center. The area is walkable and provides access to public spaces around the university and hospital facilities.
Rio's first zoological garden operated here between 1888 and 1940, a place that left a lasting mark on the city. The garden gave birth to jogo do bicho, a lottery game that eventually spread across Brazil and became deeply rooted in Brazilian culture.
