Santa Casa da Misericórdia and Church of Our Lady of Good Success, Colonial church in Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Church of Our Lady of Good Success stands on Largo da Misericórdia in central Rio de Janeiro, near Rua Santa Luzia and Praça Marechal Âncora. Its facade was altered in the early 19th century, and a dome was added to the interior. The main and side altars are Rococo in style, and the church holds three retables and a pulpit moved from the demolished Church of Santo Inácio on Morro do Castelo in 1922.
This institution was founded in 1567 as one of the first charitable organizations in colonial Brazil. It served a critical role in providing care and medical assistance to orphans and the poor during the early settlement period.
The church keeps three retables and the pulpit from the demolished Church of Santo Inácio of the Jesuit College on Morro do Castelo, moved here after the hill was razed in 1922. The retables date from the 1620s and are carved in Mannerist style, before the Baroque; they are the only ones of their kind in Rio de Janeiro and among the few surviving in Brazil.
The site is located centrally in Centro near a small square and easily accessible on foot. Regular services are held, and visitors can enter to observe the interior layout and architectural features up close.
The complex has operated as a dual-purpose facility since its founding, combining religious worship with community support under one roof. This blend of spiritual and charitable functions remains visible in how the spaces are arranged.
