Visconde de Mauá, Mountain region in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil
Visconde de Mauá comprises three villages—Mauá, Maringá, and Maromba—set in the Serra da Mantiqueira mountains at approximately 1200 meters elevation. The region features mountainous terrain with natural landscapes, hiking trails, and rural infrastructure spread across the settlements.
In 1870, Irineu Evangelista de Sousa received land concessions from the imperial government, which led to European settlement attempts in the area. These early efforts shaped the development of the villages and their settlement patterns.
Local artisans create pottery from clay, and restaurants serve regional dishes featuring trout and pine nut preparations.
The region has more than 100 lodging options, though many establishments accept only cash due to limited banking infrastructure. Visitors should plan to organize supplies and cash before arriving.
Winter temperatures in this tropical altitude setting can drop to -8°C (18°F), making it one of the coldest inhabited places in the state. This unusual climate provides a markedly different experience from the warmer lowlands below.
