Marechal Hermes

Marechal Hermes is a residential neighborhood in Rio's North Zone with wide avenues and organized residential blocks. The area includes schools, public spaces, and a central railway station that links the district to the rest of the city.

The neighborhood was established in 1913 as Brazil's first federal housing project, created during President Hermes da Fonseca's administration. This founding marked a new approach to public housing planning in the country.

The Armando Gonzaga Theater, designed by architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy, hosts performances and artistic events for the community. Residents and visitors gather here to experience theater, music, and cultural shows throughout the year.

The area is well connected by the central train line, offering regular service to Rio's downtown area. It is best explored during daytime when the streets are busy and easy to navigate.

The neighborhood retains around 165 original residential units from 1914, modeled after European working-class districts. These buildings offer a glimpse into early public housing design and how planners approached residential development at that time.
