Arquivo Histórico do Exército, Military archive and library in Centro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Arquivo Historico do Exercito is housed in the Duque de Caxias Palace and collects military records spanning five centuries. It holds various types of materials that can be digitized or accessed through different formats.
The institution was founded in 1808 as the Real Archivo Militar and was the first military archival organization created after the Portuguese Court arrived in Brazil. It developed into a central place for preserving records from different eras of Brazilian history.
The place holds photographs, maps, and documents from different periods of Brazilian history, showing how the military developed over centuries. Visitors can see how these materials preserve stories of people and events that might otherwise be forgotten.
The archive is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM and offers different ways to work with the materials. Visitors should arrive early, as spaces can fill up and some materials need to be requested in advance.
Several collections from this archive were recognized by UNESCO through the Memory of the World Program, including materials about the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. This makes it a place of international significance for military history.
