Panteão Duque de Caxias, Military memorial museum in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Panteão Duque de Caxias is a military memorial museum in downtown Rio de Janeiro housing a bronze equestrian statue of Duke of Caxias atop its building. The sculpture was created by artist Rodolfo Bernardelli and cast in Paris.
The pantheon was inaugurated in 1949 and holds the remains of Marshal Luis Alves de Lima e Silva and his wife Anna Luiza. Their bodies were relocated from Catumbi Cemetery for this memorial.
The granite base displays two carved reliefs showing military victories from the Paraguayan War: the capture of Itororó Bridge and the army's entry into Asunción. These scenes commemorate key moments in Brazilian military history that visitors can see today.
The memorial sits on Presidente Vargas Avenue across from the Duke of Caxias Palace in a central location easy to reach by foot. Morning visits offer the best light for viewing the sculpture and experiencing the space without midday crowds.
During its 1949 opening, three thousand doves were released and ten thousand attendees gathered, including military officers, civilians, and students from military academies. This grand celebration marked a significant moment in the city's civic life.
