Cathedral of Petrópolis, Neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral in Petrópolis, Brazil
The Cathedral of Saint Peter of Alcântara is a Neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral in Petrópolis, Brazil, with a tall bell tower rising from the facade. The building displays pointed arches, tracery windows, and stained glass panels depicting scenes from Christian history.
Construction began in 1884 following plans by architect Francisco Caminhoá and continued through several building phases. The cathedral reached completion and was consecrated in 1925 after more than four decades of work.
This cathedral honors Saint Peter of Alcântara, a patron saint chosen by the Brazilian imperial family. Visitors can view the royal burial chamber on the lower level, where marble monuments mark the resting places.
The cathedral opens Tuesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM and on Sundays from 1 PM to 4 PM. The main entrance stands at the front of the building, where steps lead up to the portal.
Several stained glass windows display poems written by Emperor Pedro II during his European exile. The verses express his longing for the Brazilian homeland he would never see again.
