Complexo Swift de Educação e Cultura, Industrial architectural ensemble near Parque da Represa, São José do Rio Preto, Brazil
The Complexo Swift de Educação e Cultura is a repurposed industrial ensemble on Avenida Duque de Caxias in São José do Rio Preto, Brazil, made up of three main brick buildings in British Manchesterian style. The facades follow the functional design typical of early 20th-century factory construction, with large windows and solid walls.
The Swift Company built the facility in 1942 as a plant for processing seed oils from cotton, peanuts, and sesame. After nearly three decades of operation, the factory closed in 1969 and was later converted into an education and culture center.
The Paulo Moura stage inside the complex is named after a well-known Brazilian musician and hosts concerts and performances today. Walking through the space, visitors can see how a former factory floor has been turned into a place where people gather to watch live shows.
The complex sits in a central part of São José do Rio Preto and is easy to reach by car or public transit. It is worth checking ahead for any scheduled events, as these can affect which parts of the site are open on a given day.
The factory sold its cooking oils under the brand names 'A Dona' and 'A Patroa', which became familiar products in Brazilian homes for years. Older residents of the region still remember these names as part of everyday life during that period.
