Church of Our Lady of Mercy of the Creoles

The Church of Our Lady of Mercy of the Creoles is a religious chapel with a symmetrical facade, a single entrance, and large arched windows. Its interior features a Rococo-style main altar with gilded and polychrome carvings, and the ceiling displays coffered panels depicting scenes from the Virgin's Litany.

The Brotherhood of Black men began constructing this chapel during the first half of the 18th century. The structure underwent comprehensive restoration in the early 1960s, which included rebuilding its pediment and restoring the ceiling.

The chapel served as a gathering space for the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy, a community of Black men who built and maintained it. Its ornate gilded altar and religious artwork reflect the spiritual identity and pride of this historical community.

The entrance is at the front through a single door on the symmetrical facade, making it straightforward to locate and enter. Take time inside to view the altar carvings and ceiling details up close, as the ornate decorations reward careful attention.

The nave sides feature illusionistic parapets painted with saints and angels that create an optical illusion of depth. This clever technique makes the chapel appear larger and more open than its actual physical dimensions.
