Mimoso do Sul, municipality of Espírito Santo, Brazil
Mimoso do Sul is a small city in the southern part of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, about 280 kilometers from the capital Vitória. It is known for its old buildings from the 1800s, including farms with French-style gardens and Art Nouveau and Art Deco houses from the last century.
The city began in 1852 when Captain Pedro Ferreira da Silva bought a farm called Fazenda do Vale Mimozo and later registered it as a district. In 1943, it received its present name after being known as João Pessoa and became an independent town.
The name comes from a 19th-century farm called Fazenda do Vale Mimozo that was established here. The town keeps this connection to its past alive through cobblestone streets and old houses that show how people lived and built in those times.
The city is reachable from Vitória in about three to three and a half hours by car via the Rodovia do Sol or BR-101 highway. Visitors can find small inns and cafes serving homemade food, cheeses, and fresh juices, as well as modest accommodations for a comfortable stay.
A local legend tells of a man who made a pact with the devil and could turn to stone to escape enemies. According to local storytellers, this man was buried upside down to hide his body from those seeking him.
