Rio Preto National Forest, forêt nationale du Brésil
Rio Preto National Forest is a protected conservation area in Conceição da Barra, Espírito Santo, covering about 2,830 hectares. The landscape is mostly flat with heights ranging from 5 to 50 meters, dotted with small streams and characterized by dense tree stands interspersed with open clearings.
The protected area was established in 1990 by government decree to preserve remaining Atlantic Forest. Prior to this, the region had been intensively logged during the 20th century until eventually receiving legal protection.
The forest serves the local community as a place for learning and outdoor recreation. Visitors come for walks, bird watching, and to understand the natural processes that keep the ecosystem functioning.
The forest is accessible via a 12-kilometer road connecting from the BR-101 highway to the settlement of Córrego do Artur. Basic facilities include marked trails, small lakes, and a visitor center where guests can safely explore the surroundings.
Despite past logging and fires, portions of the forest still look remarkably original, containing around 338 tree species. This makes it a living window into the region's past, allowing visitors to see how the landscape appeared before intensive use.
