Itaúnas is a coastal settlement along the Atlantic shore, surrounded by expansive sand dunes that create an open landscape between the beach and inland vegetation. The village occupies a flat terrain where sandy areas dominate the surroundings.
The original settlement was abandoned during the 1970s when advancing sand dunes forced residents to relocate to higher ground. The community was rebuilt at a new location nearby to escape further sand encroachment.
The July Forró Festival draws musicians and dancers to celebrate traditional Brazilian rhythms through live performances and community dance gatherings.
Regular bus services connect Vitória to Conceição da Barra, with local transportation options available to reach the village. The area is most accessible during drier months when the sandy terrain is easier to traverse.
The church tower from the buried village still rises above the sand dunes, serving as a silent marker of the settlement lost beneath. This remnant shows how nature gradually reclaimed the original townsite.
