Praia do Riacho Doce straddles the border between Bahia and Espírito Santo, where a small stream, the riacho, crosses the sand and marks the state line. The Bahia section belongs to Mucuri, the Espírito Santo section to Conceição da Barra. The beach is a stretch of sand at the mouth of that stream, not part of Itaúnas State Park.

The name Riacho Doce refers to the stream that crosses the sand and marks the boundary between Bahia and Espírito Santo, with the Bahian side in Mucuri and the Capixaba side in Conceição da Barra. The beach lies near the mouth of the Rio Doce, whose surrounding Atlantic Forest was largely cleared from the 20th century onward for eucalyptus plantations and cattle pasture.

The beach marks the border between Bahia and Espírito Santo, and its name comes from the freshwater stream that crosses the sand and divides the two states. On the Bahia side it belongs to Mucuri; on the Espírito Santo side, to Conceição da Barra. Local communities on both banks use the stream mouth as a natural meeting point.

The beach sits at the mouth of the Riacho Doce stream, which marks the Bahia–Espírito Santo state line: the northern half belongs to Mucuri (BA), the southern to Conceição da Barra (ES). Access is by the BA-001/ES-060 coastal road plus a stretch on sand or on foot; the nearest base is Conceição da Barra, about 20 km south. Go at low tide, when the stream crossing is shallowest.

A freshwater stream flows from the dunes into the ocean, creating an environment for endangered sea turtles. This mixing of fresh and salt water makes the coastline ecologically special and draws visitors interested in watching wildlife.
