Pirenópolis

Pirenópolis is a municipality in Goiás, Brazil, sitting between mountains and rivers at around 800 meters elevation. Colonial buildings from Portuguese times shape the townscape, while the surrounding area offers numerous waterfalls and natural landscapes.

The settlement began in 1727 as Minas de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Meia Ponte after Portuguese settlers discovered gold deposits in the Rio das Almas. The gold rush quickly brought miners and traders to the region and laid the foundation for the present-day town.

The annual celebration of Divino Espírito Santo brings horsemen in traditional costumes to perform battle scenes from medieval times. This theatrical performance draws visitors from across the region and shows the town's continuing connection to its Portuguese roots and religious heritage.

The town sits around 120 kilometers from Goiânia and 150 kilometers from Brasília and can be reached via paved roads. Two hospitals and a campus of the State University of Goiás provide basic care and education locally.

More than twenty waterfalls sit within a few kilometers around town, making it a hub for nature lovers in central Brazil. Many of these falls can be reached via short trails or dirt roads and offer natural swimming spots.
