Cemitério Santa Isabel

Cemitério Santa Isabel is a burial ground in Mucugê featuring white mausoleums constructed on natural rock formations that step down the hillside. The site contains both open areas and walled sections with historical burial structures arranged across the sloped terrain.

This burial ground was founded in 1855 during a cholera outbreak in the region. Wealthy diamond merchants brought foreign architects to design elaborate tomb structures, leaving their mark on the site.

The tombs reflect a blend of Catholic beliefs and local building traditions that shows how the community honored their dead. Walking through, you notice how the structures fit into the rocky landscape, creating a connection between the burial ground and the mountains around it.

The site is easy to reach and allows visitors to explore both level areas and sloped sections comfortably. Wearing sturdy shoes is helpful since you will walk over uneven terrain and small rises.
