Estação Calçada, Railway station in Calçada district, Salvador, Brazil
Estação Calçada is an elevated railway station with a sprawling footprint, featuring raised walkways that connect train platforms to a bus terminal. The building contains lottery retailers, small shops, and restrooms on the lower level alongside a larger commercial space.
The station opened in 1860 and served as a vital link to Salvador's port until the railway line closed in the 1990s. Afterward, it transformed into a hub for other forms of transportation and urban services.
This station sits in a district that once housed Brazil's first workers' housing development, established by industrialist Luís Tarquínio in the 1890s. The neighborhood still reflects the character of that early working community in how it is organized and used.
The site is straightforward to navigate thanks to the connected bus station nearby and clear walkways on different levels. Visitors should note that some areas can be busy with buses and passengers, while others are quieter.
Old railway tracks remain visible beneath the asphalt, a reminder of the site's former role in connecting the city to trade routes. The station now also integrates with the Bike Salvador system, which has offered bicycle sharing since 2014.
