Quilombo Remanso

Quilombo Remanso is a traditional settlement located in wetlands near the Marimbus region with simple houses and shared community spaces. The residents work primarily as fishers and shape the daily character of this landscape through their labor.

The settlement began in the 19th century when people fleeing slavery found refuge in the marshlands of Chapada Diamantina. This founding was part of a broader history of resistance and freedom-seeking in this region.

Residents practice Afro-Brazilian traditions through music, dance, and fishing methods that pass from one generation to the next. These customs are woven into daily life and visible in the community's celebrations and work routines.

Visitors reach the community via dirt roads from Lençóis, where local guides offer boat tours through the wetlands. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and prepare for changeable weather conditions.

The community gained official protection status in 1988 through Brazil's Federal Constitution, making it an important landmark of the nation's resistance history. This legal recognition helps preserve the land and the residents' way of life.
