Pojuca, Municipality in Bahia, Brazil.
Pojuca is a municipality in Bahia that spans urban and rural areas as part of the Greater Salvador metropolitan region. The town sits at about 82 meters (270 feet) above sea level, with the Pojuca River running through the landscape.
The first settlements took shape in 1684 when three families—Freire de Carvalho, Veloso, and Saraiva—established themselves along the Pojuca River, building houses and sugar mills. These early structures laid the foundation for what the place would become.
The name Pojuca comes from Tupi indigenous words meaning water and manioc, two elements that shaped daily life here. This linguistic connection reveals how the local environment and its resources have defined the place's identity.
The place is easily accessible thanks to its proximity to the Salvador metropolitan area with local transit options available. Keep in mind that the area covers both urban and rural sections, so navigation varies depending on where you go.
The railway station that connected the town to Salvador starting in 1862 was transformed in 2019 into the City Memorial Cultural Space Dona Lindú. This conversion preserves the rail heritage while creating a place for local memory.
