Sapiranga Reserve, Nature reserve in Mata de São João, Brazil
The Sapiranga Reserve covers 600 hectares of Atlantic Forest with seven marked trails cutting through thick vegetation. These paths lead visitors to waterfalls on the Rio Pojuca river that flow through the forest.
The reserve was created in 1999 to protect the Atlantic Forest and its native species from loss and damage. Since then it has served as a protected space for the plants and animals found in this region.
Local communities help run conservation programs that focus on teaching visitors about the forest and its protection. You can see how people work together to keep this place healthy and open for tourism.
The reserve is reachable via Linha Verde road about 2 kilometers south, and you can hike, ride horses, or bike on marked paths. The grounds offer activities suited to different fitness levels and interests.
The reserve sits just 22 meters above sea level and works as a travel route for animals that migrate through the region. It also protects many plants and creatures that live nowhere else but in this forest.
