Ricardo Brennand Institute, Cultural museum in Recife, Brazil
The Ricardo Brennand Institute is an art museum in Recife, Brazil, housed in a building with battlements and towers in the Tudor style. The galleries spread across several pavilions connected by gardens and courtyards.
Businessman Ricardo Brennand opened the museum in 2002 on the grounds of a former ceramic factory. The collection grew around documents and artworks from the Dutch occupation period in the 17th century.
The name honors an entrepreneur from Pernambuco who opened his private collection to visitors. The rooms display armor and weaponry alongside paintings that document colonial Brazil.
The site covers 77,000 square meters with several buildings and extensive outdoor areas that justify a longer visit. Opening hours run from Tuesday through Sunday in the afternoon, with the complex closed on Mondays.
The library holds 62,000 items on the history of Dutch Brazil, including rare books and prints. Some documents date from the 17th century and complement the painting collection with handwritten sources.
