The historic center spans 37 hectares with 700 buildings, featuring colonial mansions, squares, and centuries-old churches across five neighborhoods.
Founded in 1585 as Nossa Senhora das Neves, the area changed names to Filipeia, then Frederikstad during Dutch rule before becoming João Pessoa in 1930.
The district contains architectural elements from various periods, including Baroque churches, Rococo designs, and Mannerist structures throughout its streets and squares.
The area received national heritage status in 2007 and encompasses 25 streets and six squares, offering guided walking tours through its historical buildings.
The Santa Roza Theater, inaugurated in 1889, stands as the fifth oldest theater in Brazil with its Baroque style and Greco-Roman façade.
