Church of Saint Francis and Convent of Saint Antony and Chapel of the Third Order, Baroque church complex in João Pessoa, Brazil.
The Church of Saint Francis and Convent of Saint Antony and Chapel of the Third Order is a baroque ensemble in João Pessoa, Brazil. The site combines several connected spaces with carved woodwork, gilded surfaces, Portuguese tiles, and a museum for sacred art.
Construction of this Franciscan complex began in 1589 at a point that became the starting place of João Pessoa. Work continued for almost two centuries and ended in 1770 when the last chapel was completed.
The building carries the names of two saints and the lay community that used it for worship. Visitors today see altars with twisted columns and paintings that show how European forms were adapted by local hands.
Visits are possible from Tuesday to Saturday during morning and afternoon hours, with shorter hours on Sunday. Admission is paid at the entrance and gives access to all areas including the adjoining museum.
The floor of the sacristy contains myrrh that releases a natural scent when stepped on. This feature gave the room a particular smell for centuries and remains noticeable today.
