The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, built from 1592, has a single stone tower and a facade with austere lines and Baroque arabesques. Its wide nave holds floral motifs carved in limestone, the shield of the Order of Mount Carmel and a large panel on the main altar bearing the initials of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The adjoining Chapel of Santa Teresa de Jesus, finished in 1777, has an octagonal nave with bevelled corners.

Construction of this complex began in 1591, making it one of the earliest Catholic establishments in the region during Brazil's colonial period under Portuguese rule. Its foundation was part of the early spread of Christianity in northeastern Brazil.

The convent takes its name from devotion to Mary and the Mount Carmel tradition, serving as a spiritual center for the local Catholic community. The religious practices and gatherings held here continue to shape the spiritual life of residents in the city.

This building sits in the historic center of João Pessoa and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can explore both the exterior and interior to observe the architectural details and religious objects displayed throughout.

This structure received official recognition from IPHAN, Brazil's national heritage agency, in 1938 and was placed under protection. This early acknowledgment highlights its importance to the country's cultural legacy.
