Praia de Tambaú, Urban beach in João Pessoa, Brazil
Praia de Tambaú is an urban beach on the coast of João Pessoa, lined by a wide paved promenade with coconut palms and fig trees running along its length. The sand is flat and open, reaching from the walkway straight to the water with no major obstacles in between.
In the 1970s, the area was developed as a tourist destination, which turned the shore into a public gathering point for the city. That transformation gradually shaped the neighborhood that now surrounds the beach.
Street vendors along the shore sell fresh coconuts and food typical of northeastern Brazil, following a tradition that has shaped daily beach life for generations. Watching this exchange between vendors and visitors gives a clear sense of how the beach works as a shared social space.
Hotels, restaurants, and shops line the promenade and are easy to reach on foot from the sand. Coming early in the day generally means fewer people and calmer water for swimming.
At low tide, small boats depart from the shore to reach Ilha de Areia Vermelha, a red sand island that appears only when the sea recedes. The island changes shape with each tidal cycle and can disappear entirely depending on the season.
