Bouvet Island, Norwegian volcanic island in South Atlantic Ocean

The island spans 49 square kilometers and contains steep cliffs rising to Olavtoppen peak at 780 meters above sea level.

French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier identified the island in 1739, leading Norway to claim and incorporate it into its territory in 1930.

The island maintains its status as a nature reserve since 1971, protecting substantial colonies of Antarctic fur seals and numerous seabird species.

Landing remains extremely challenging due to the surrounding ice cliffs, persistent fog, and the island's remote location 2,500 kilometers southwest of South Africa.

The territorial waters surrounding this ice-covered landmass host a growing population of fur seals, increasing from 7,900 to 65,000 between 1990 and 1997.
